The Rwanda Development Board has announced that the mountain gorilla population in the Virunga Massif has reached 1,200 individuals, up from 880 in 2018. This remarkable 36% increase is attributed to intensive conservation efforts, anti-poaching patrols, and community-based tourism programs that incentivize local communities to protect the primates.

Rwanda now accounts for over 60% of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking permits generate over $100 million annually, funding further conservation and community development projects.
