Construction of Kigali's first light rail system officially began with a groundbreaking ceremony in Kanombe. The 25 km line will connect Kigali International Airport to the city center, with 12 stations along the route. The $350 million project, funded by a consortium of Chinese and European investors, is expected to carry 200,000 passengers daily by 2029.
The light rail is part of Kigali's broader sustainable urban mobility plan, which also includes 100 km of dedicated bus lanes and 50 km of cycling paths.
